Stations

Station layers

A Station layer is placeholder for individual types of monitoring stations. Station layers are displayed as separate features in the Map view, presenting the location of stations, e.g. river discharge gauging stations.

Station layers will contain stations belonging to the defined type of monitoring stations. By using the Add Stations functionality the stations can be imported to stations layers, either from Shape-files or Excel-files containing the coordinates of the stations.

Station layers can have Station Data associated to individual stations in the layer. The station data will often be time series (station records), but documents, spreadsheets as pictures can also be associated to and thereby accessible when selecting a station.

Station layers can also have documents and spreadsheets associated to the layer itself accessible from the Report button in the Map menu.

Manage Station Layers

The Station layers button under Map Settings opens the Manage Station Layers dialog for adding a new station layer category and specifying attributes for this station layer.

Dialog for adding, editing and removing station network layers and defining attributes for the layers.

A station layer can be added (imported), edited or removed. The name of the station layer will appear in the map legend when displayed in the Map View.

*Click on Add to create a station layer: *

Click on a station layer and click on edit to modify the attribute table:

Click on a station layer and click on remove to delete the station layer:

When a Station layer has been added to the list, attributes can be specified. Attributes are important for adding information to the station layer, e.g. when displaying layer labels. When importing stations their attributes will be displayed in the Station layer if they match the attribute names given here. The following information must be specified for each attribute:

Name The name of the Attribute;
Type The type of the attribute (Select from the dropdown list);
Length Only relevant for strings. Should reflect the maximum length of the text given under the attribute name – make sure the length is long enough, station names can e.g. sometimes be very long;
Display Attribute The attribute, which will be the default attribute displayed as labels for the station layer.

Stations belonging to a specific station layer are imported under the Station button in the Maps settings.

Stations

Stations are the individual features in a station layer, showing the location of the station. Stations will often have time series, i.e. monitoring record associated to the station, but other information can also be associated, namely documents (e.g. a history file), a picture, e.g. of the station, or a spreadsheet, e.g. describing some calculations, rating curve table, etc..

Station layers are point layers, where the individual points represent a station.

Add Stations

Stations can be imported, individually or in groups, as Shape files or MS Excel files into the Station layer. A station layer can be updated as required.

To Add stations click on the Stations button under Map settings. It opens a dialog box showing a list of created stations layers.

Dialog for adding and editing stations of available station layer categories

Click on the station layer for which the station(s) should be added. Click on the button to add a new set of stations to the selected station layer. The Windows Explorer opens and then browse to the file to be imported. This can be either from a shape file or from an Excel file.

Import of Shape files

Import of MS Excel files

When adding stations using MS Excel file formats, a new dialog opens when you click on .

Dialog for adding a set of stations to a station layer

Station attributes in the station file (attributes on the shape file or columns in the Excel file) can be mapped to the defined attributes in the station layer, so they can be displayed and used when station layer is displayed in the Map view.

The user needs to define the coordinate system and which attributes (or columns in the Excel sheet) that contains the x-coordinate (longitude) and y-coordinate (latitude), respectively.

If there are some errors in the Excel file the system will identify these errors and warn the user, so they are corrected before clicking the OK button.

Edit Stations

Click on the button to add or remove individual stations to/from a station layer category as well as editing the attributes. To delete a station, then select the station and press the Delete button. To add a station then click the Add button and type in as a minimum the coordinates, and preferably the other attributes if known.

MS Excel Input Format of Station set

The MS Excel file must contain a column for each attribute. There should be at least three attribute columns for identifying the station (e.g. name or ID) and the coordinates of the station (e.g. decimal degree). The first row shall contain the headers (name of attributes) and the station information need to start in the second row. Note: The text in the header must not contain blank spaces.

When importing the station set, the headers in the Excel sheet can be mapped to the attribute names of the station layer.

Station Data

Station data can comprise of four different types of data and information: 1) Time series (e.g. rainfall or discharge records), 2) Documents (e.g. a history file), 3) Pictures (e.g. pictures of the station) and 4) Spreadsheets (e.g. describing calculations, rating tables, etc.)

Import Station Data

The Station Data button under Station data and knowledge products opens a dialog for associating station data to stations in a station layer.

From the Add Station Data dialog, data can be imported and associated to the station displayed in the dialog.

  1. Select a Station layer from the drop down list.

  2. Select a station if data will only be imported to one station. Note: Skip this step if it is import to multiple stations from an Excel sheet.

  3. Select one of the available types:

  4. Time series;

  5. Spreadsheet;

  6. Documents;

If Time series is selected as Data type, the following data formats can be selected:

  • ASCII Timeseries (general);

  • Dfs Timeseries;

  • Excel Timeseries.

Clicking on the button opens a file explorer to select the spreadsheet, documents (including pictures) or time series (for Dfs and Excel data formats) and a specific data import scheme for ASCII time series formats.

Add Time series in MS Excel format

Importing station time series from MS Excel format is the most convenient format because it is possible to import many time series at once.

Click on the Station Data

button under Station data and knowledge products:

Select the Station layer where the data will be imported to.

NOTE: Do not select a particular station as it is a bulk import.

Select Time series as Data type format and click on the open button to open the file explorer. Select the file and click OK.

A new dialog will open displaying the data as given in the MS excel file:

The upper window provide a number of possibilities: 1) Select which time series to import, 2) Change the default time series name, 3) Check and select the correct type of variable and 4) Make sure the time series is associated with the correct station.

The lower window provide an overview of the time series and time series values.

If the data has been specified correctly in your Excel-file, MIKE INFO will do the following when pressing OK:

  1. Do a bulk import of all of the time series in the Excel file (which can be up to several hundreds).

  2. Link the time series to the respective stations where they originate from

Required format of the imported MS excel file:

Import of station time series records from a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel) requires a workbook with one worksheet.

This worksheet may contain multiple time series. If it contains multiple time series, they must be using the same date column. If not, the time series records can be given in their individual spreadsheets.

Example of time series data file format where four time series are given. They are all referring to the same date/time column.

NOTE: The time series records are described by two or more columns depending on number of stations included in the sheet:

  • Column1: Data/time; (See figure below on valid excel formats of the date column)

  • Column 2 – N: Data values

Two header rows are required in each column from column B and onwards. For each time series, the header rows may contain the following information:

  • Row 1: Data Type

  • Row 2: Station ID or Station Name (depending on which attribute to associate to on the station layer)

If a header row is empty, the row will need to be filled when the data are imported. The following Data Types can be used (Note: Use the exact spelling as given in the Table below):

Data Type
Rainfall [mm]
Discharge [m\^3/s]
WaterLevel [m]
Temperature [C]
Evaporation [mm]
Concentration [mg/l]
GroundwaterDepth [m]

Note: If data is missing on a specific date the cell should be empty. No other values can represent missing values.

Note: If the data column contains invalid numbers the data record cannot be imported into MIKE INFO. MIKE INFO will provide the user with an error message and where the error appears. The error then has to be corrected before the data can be imported.

Note: The Excel workbook should only contain one sheet.

Add time series in Dfs0 file format

Station data in dfs0 file formats can be imported one at the time.

Select the Station layer where the data will be imported to.

Select the station where the time series should be associated to.

Select Time series as the Data type and click on the open button to open the file explorer. Select the dfs0 file and click OK.

A dialog similar to import of time series from an Excel file will be shown.

A chart of data record(s) can be displayed by:

  • Double clicking on one or more stations in the station data tab window to the right of the screen.

  • Right click on a station item in the station data window tab to the right of the screen to display the record in a new chart or add the record to the existing chart.

Note: The type of station data and information displayed in the Station data window depend on which of the four Tabs (Time series, Spreadsheets, Documents or Pictures) is selected.

The selected time series will be displayed in a new or existing chart tab. To see the actual values click on the Show Values button in the Chart menu.

View station information

Use the Select button to select the stations for which you want to search for time series and knowledge products, e.g. river gauging stations for which some history files have been associated.

The list of available information (knowledge products) associated to the selected stations will be shown in the window to the right when the “Documents” Tab has been selected.

When right clicking on a document, the user can open the document – and a user with administration rights can also delete the document.

Similar can be done for Spreadsheets and Pictures associated to a station.
