How To

Update Time Series

This section will focus on how time series data can be updated in a MIKE INFO database.

The process of how to update time series data that is already in the database will be described. This can be done as follows:

Updating time series manually

  • Firstly, close all of the tabs you may have open, so the only tab is the default ‘Station map’.

  • Select a station from the map view for which you would like to update. Select the time series from the list on the right-hand side.

  • Click on the ‘Data’ tab, then click on ‘Update Time Series’ (this button won’t be activated unless a time series record is selected first).

  • A functionality should appear on the left hand side of the screen with particulars to fill out (as seen in the figure below), as well as the associated tabular view automatically being shown.

  • From the ‘Format’ dropdown menu, select the format that the time series file is in that you’ll be using to update, i.e. “Excel files (.xls, .xlsx)”.

  • Click on the Browse button, to browse for an appropriate Excel file to be imported to update the time series. Select it then click ‘Open’. Note: ensure that the date-time format from the Excel file corresponds to that of the format in the ‘Time format’ box. This can only be changed when the Format is ASCII, and the ‘Use default time format’ box is unticked, thereafter the Time format can be changed.

  • Leave the Time Format as default (make sure it corresponds with the time format in the Excel file).

  • Ensure that the correct values have been chose for Time column (usually 1), Data column and Data start row (as seen in the figure below).

  • Click on ‘Append values’. The values from the Excel file will appear as dots in the chart view as an Appended Series (see figure below), representing the values that have been imported. At this stage, the values are only displayed on the chart.

  • Tick the ‘Overwrite existing values’ box, then click on ‘Save Changes’ to overwrite the original values.

  • Click on Append values again. The new values will now appear in the tabular view. Finally, click Save changes again to overwrite the values.

Note: Using this tool enables user to update a current time series (which may have gaps), or append (add on more recent time series to the end of an existing time series) to an existing time series dataset.

Similarly, edits can be done to time series by changing the values in the tabular view. This can be done as follows:

  • Select a time series. Click on the ‘Data’ tab, then click on ‘Update Time Series’. With a time series chart plotted, and the corresponding table in view, edit some of the values in the table.

  • When finished, tick the ‘Overwrite existing values’ box and click on Save Changes. To check that your changes have been saved, re-plot the time series in a new chart and see if your changes appear.

Note: As part of editing time series in the tabular view, you can add new time steps at the end of the time series sequence, by selecting the last row (becoming highlighted) and then pressing enter or tab (on the keyboard) at the last cell on the table. This new time step will have a default value according to the time span between the previous 2 last time steps.

Note: You can also insert time steps between 2 existing time steps, by selecting the row (becoming highlighted) and right click on a row header, the select to add row above or below. Similarly, selected rows can also be removed in this way (see figure below).
