Gauge Manager

Gauge Manager Overview

The Gauge Manager contains utilities for handling rating curves including associations to stations.

Gauges refers to shape files imported into the GIS manager (point feature classes) containing gauge stations.

The gauge manager does not provide an explorer for handling rating curves. This is done using tools.

Gauge Manager Tools

Rating Curve Tool

Concepts

  • The rating curve functionality is provided as a tool.

  • The starting point is a GIS station layer where the rating curve is being associated with a station (point feature)

  • The rating curve data includes raw time series of H and Q, approved time series of H and Q. The idea is here that the user will “smoothen” spikes out of the raw values before calculating the rating curve coefficients

  • The rating curve coefficients can be calculated for different periods

  • When the coefficients have been calculated they can be applied on a “live” H time series for calculating the corresponding Q values

Starting the tool

The user needs to specify a river gauge station shapefile first. This is the layer it will be possible to associate rating curves to.

To load the layer, click “import from shapefile” in the tool explorer and specify path to the “gauge” station layer located in a folder.

Right click the imported “gauge” in the database and copy full path.

Click the rating curve tool in the tool explorer, paste the stream gauge path and select the attribute that shall be used as station identifier.

Click the tool run button.

Click the new rating button in the upper right corner and in the pop-up select the station that the rating curve shall be associated with and give it a name

Click the Create Rating Curve button

The next step is about adding the raw data to the rating curve.

Open the spreadsheet manager.

Click import spreadsheet in the tool explorer and specify path of the rating curve data located in a folder on disk. The spreadsheet should contain columns containing dates, H and Q (see below figure for the format of the spreadsheet).

Right click the imported “rating curve data” in the database and copy full path.

Navigate back in the rating curve tool .

Click the time series toolbar in the lower right corner and select “import from the spreadsheet”.

Paste the spreadsheet path.

Periods

Use the Periods section of the action panel to define the periods.

Rating curve

Use the rating curve section of the action panel to calculate the rating curve coefficients.

Rating curves can be calculated for different water levels per period.

Applying the rating curve

Associate a existing “live” H time series with the rating and either associate an existing correspondig Q time times series or create one.

Thereafter the rating curve can be applied (updating the Q time series) from the Settings menu.
